LWV Duluth - Joyce Benson Scholarship Fund

League of Women Voters of Duluth has made a commitment to raise enough money for a permanent scholarship named for one of the first women in Duluth to be politically active, Joyce Benson. Joyce was a stay-at-home mother who joined the workforce while her children were young. She then pursued part-time study at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and created the first course of study (for herself) in Women's Studies at UMD. Her persistence resulted in a major that many others took advantage of during the height of the women's movement. She was instrumental in promoting world understanding through development of Duluth's Sister Cities initiative. She was the second woman elected to the Duluth City Council and she was President of the League of Women Voters of Duluth.

We have a very modest amount of what we need, thanks to the spontaneous generosity of members to help fund this permanent scholarship, which is also supported by Joyce's family and friends.

Please donate to support this effort. A League of Women Voters scholarship at UMD will increase public awareness of what we do, honor Joyce's memory, and support a recipient whose philosophy embodies the principles dear to League members.
