![]() Book Clubs and individuals are invited to plan ahead to participate in a community book read during January 2014, Duluth’s second annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The book read of Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd is part of a local effort to raise community awareness about trafficking of underage girls in the Twin Ports area. In her memoir, Girls Like Us, Rachel Lloyd describes how during her teens, she ended up a victim of commercial sexual exploitation. With time, through incredible resilience, and with help, she finally broke free of her pimp and her past and devoted herself to helping other young girls escape "the life." Lloyd, a nationally recognized expert on the issue of child sex trafficking in the United States, will speak to the community at Mitchell Auditorium, 7:00 PM on January 28 to address local needs and solutions to underage sex trafficking in the Twin Ports area. For more information about the book read and to request a discussion leader for book clubs, contact Shunu Shrestha at PAVSA, 218-726-1442. Copies of Girls Like Us may be borrowed from the Duluth Public Library or purchased from the Fitger’s Book Store and Barnes and Noble (look for their displays). Sponsors of the book read include the Duluth Trafficking Task Force, PAVSA, League of Women Voters Duluth, Duluth Public Library, Lutheran Social Service, Alworth Center for Peace and Justice at CSS, Life House, and the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office. |
