ACTIVE LOCAL COMMITTEES
The League of Women Voters of Duluth actively participates in issues and events that have a direct impact on citizens and the environment.
League membership provides opportunities to meet people who share similar interests and passions. We engage in action that will result in meaningful public policy. Our members become informed and have an increased understanding and knowledge of issues at a local, state and national level. Being a league member offers the opportunity for personal growth, leadership development, and networking, but most of all, it allows an individual to make a difference in the community and have fun doing it. Ways to Become Active in Your Community
International Relations Committee: This committee educates and informs LWV members on selected current international issues. The committee hosts international groups such as the Humphrey Fellows and facilitates cultural exchanges with community groups.
Membership: This committee focuses on recruiting and retaining members as well as engaging all members in LWV events/issues. Activities this committee is responsible for include: mentoring new members, updating the membership directory and keeping membership records.
Voter Service Committee: League of Women Voters of Duluth sponsors candidate forums, provides a voter guide, helps register voters, hosts voter registration training and provides speakers on ballot issues. The goal of the committee is to provide voters with nonpartisan factual information.
Environmental Action Committee: This committee advocates for protection and preservation of natural resources including land, water, and air based on LWV local, state, and national positions. Each year the committee plans two educational programs on environmental issues.
Program Planning Committee: Each year members gather to review local and state or national LWV positions and to consider supporting new positions. For information on current positions visit our website at www.lwvduluth.org.
Communications Committee: This committee provides timely, accurate information about LWV Duluth sponsored events to our members, the community and LWVMN. This is done via our Voter newsletter, LWV Duluth website, E-News, Facebook, Twitter, press releases, flyers and postcards, and newspaper submissions with the goal of promoting the LWV mission. The Communications Committee also maintains the mailing label and E-News databases.
Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee: This committee is dedicated to including all voices in LWV Duluth activities. This committee works to advance cultural awareness and appreciation through education programs, dialogue and action. This committee places a special emphasis on working with the Voter Service Committee to bring voter registration, voter education and get-out-the-vote efforts to all populations of Duluth, including those that are under represented.
Special Events: Be part of a team to help plan one or more event: Fall Membership Kick-off, Holiday Social, Annual Meeting, Citizens in Action Workshop and others.
Nominating: The nominating committee will present its nominations for officers, directors, and the elected members of the board at the annual meeting.
Observer Corps: Silent observers attend and report on city and county government meetings, including but not limited to city council, school board, parks and recreation commission and community development commission.
Action Committee: The action committee follows issues at the state legislature, posts action alerts, lobbies by phone, email, or letter writing, writes letters to the editor, trains lobbyists, interviews legislators, assists with annual roundtable with state legislators, participates in the study of a local issue to establish a position for action and organizes trips to the state capitol.
Budget Committee: The budget committee is an important part of League planning. In order to reach the objectives in study and action so vital to League, planning for covering the expenses as needed. An indispensable aid to local League budget chairs is the LWVUS publication, The Art of Budget Building. This gives the job description, timeline and local League budget planning which clearly spells out the responsibilities and facilitates the work. The Committee studies state and national proposed budgets and meets to put ideas together and develop cost estimates. Committee proposes budget and presents it to the board. The committee prepares the budget for the upcoming year so it can be approved by the members at the Annual Meeting. It presents the proposed budget and explanation in newsletter prior to the annual meeting. Plan a presentation for the Annual Meeting. Budget Committee Chair presents the budget at the Annual Meeting. Membership revises and/or adopts it at that time.

Book Club: The Sisters Book Club meets for dinner and discussion every other month from September through May.
