DULUTH'S VERY OWN ROSIE LOEFFLER-KEPT RECEIVES PEGGY THOMPSON AWARD AT STATE CONVENTION

Rosie Loeffler-Kemp was honored on Saturday, May 21 by the LWVMN at their state convention. She received the Peggy Thompson Award for her years of dedication to the League of Women Voters Duluth and in particular
her organizing for 13 years the Citizen in Action Training.

LEGISLATIVE FELLOWS PROGRAM IN COLUMBIA

The third group of outbound U.S. Legislative Fellows is set to depart March 2 for a 10 day trip to Colombia. The group will visit the cities of Cartagena, Santa Marta, Riohacha and La Guajira in the CaribbeanCoastas well as the cities of Bogotáand Medellín.
Melanie Ford, a former county attorney from Duluth (MN) and Helene Dudley, from the League of Miami-Dade (FL), along with Zaida Arguedas, Deputy Executive Director of the League, will travel to Cartagena, Santa Marta, Ariguani, Riohacha, y la Guajira. They will meet with government representatives, local community leaders, and members of civil society.
The group will also meet with 100 women who benefit from a microfinance project and will participate in activities celebrating “International Women’s Day.” Part of the day will include visits with local women artisans, a presentation by a local professor of Caribbeanculture, and interviews with the local press. To conclude the visit to the area the group will visit with the Wayúu, one of the largest groups of Native Americans in Colombia.
Diane Hibino, of the Montgomery County (FL) League, Laurie Bergner, of the McLean County (IL) League, and Karla Garcia, a DC Board of Elections official, along with Cristina Atencio, Democracy Specialist at theLeaguewill spend their time in Bogotá, the capital and largest city in Colombia. They will have a packed schedule that includes meetings with government officials, a visit with members of Congress, with the undersecretary of Women and Gender Issues, the municipalityof Chapinero, as well as meetings with officials at the National Board of Elections.
There will be meeting on March 9th at the U.S. Embassy attended by the Colombian Legislative Fellows – 17 out of 18 – the three out of five U.S. Legislative Fellows and two League representatives will meet with Embassy officials to discuss the program, its merits and to discuss possible joint projects.
The exchange activities will conclude with attendance to the opening of the Festival Leyenda Vallenata.
